The comparison that actually matters for a New Jersey home: how each system sees the ball, where it has to sit in your room, and what each manufacturer publishes as a space requirement.

Most comparisons of these three argue about accuracy. In a real New Jersey basement, that is rarely the deciding factor — the deciding factor is where the unit has to sit relative to the ball, because that determines whether the system fits the room you own.

Radar systems track the ball and club through flight from behind the hitting position, which means they need standoff distance behind the golfer. Photometric (camera) systems read the ball optically from beside it at impact, which removes the behind-the-golfer requirement but adds placement precision. Overhead systems mount to the ceiling, freeing the floor entirely but making mounting height the governing constraint.

In a purpose-built room all three work. In a 1950s Essex County basement with a duct run down the middle, the placement requirement is usually what rules a system in or out. That is the question worth answering first.

Figures below are quoted from each manufacturer's own published guidance and linked. We do not publish numbers we have not read in a vendor document.

Read this before the table. Everything in it is the manufacturer’s specification for their equipment, reproduced so you can see what each company actually documents. None of it is our recommendation, and some of it is lower than any room we will design. We plan every full-swing simulator room around a minimum finished ceiling height of 9½ ft (9 ft 6 in), measured at the hitting position under the lowest obstruction. We confirm your exact clearance with a swing test during the site survey. Where a manufacturer publishes a figure below 9½ ft, that is a statement about the tolerance of a sensor, not about a room worth building.

What this means in a New Jersey basement

Published minimums are a filter, not a decision

Read those numbers carefully and one thing stands out: every manufacturer publishes a minimum and a recommendation, and they are not the same number. The gap between them is where most disappointing installs live. Both companies are telling you the same thing in different words: the floor of what the equipment tolerates is not the height at which the room is good. That gap is the reason we set our own minimum at 9½ ft and hold it regardless of which system a client wants. It is the height at which the room stops being a compromise.

This matters more in New Jersey than in most markets because of the housing stock. A great deal of our work happens in basements that were finished under a joist bay, a duct trunk, or a beam that nobody expected anyone to swing a driver under. The number that governs your room is not the height in the middle of the floor — it is the clearance at the hitting position, under the lowest thing above it.

And clearance is not a single number even then. It depends on your height, your swing plane, and whether you are right or left handed. A published minimum tells you whether to keep going. A swing test in the actual room with your longest club tells you what you actually have. That is why we measure before quoting and why we won't specify equipment off a floor plan.

Which one needs the least ceiling height?

Start with the number that actually governs your project: NJ Golf Simulators plans every full-swing room around a minimum finished ceiling height of 9 ft 6 in, whichever system goes in it. That is our standard and it does not move by brand. The manufacturers publish their own, lower, figures — TrackMan documents a minimum room height for the iO while recommending 10 ft, and Foresight recommends 10 ft while documenting reduced clearances for restricted play. Those are equipment tolerances, not room designs, and we do not build to them. Golfzon does not publish public room-dimension specs at all.

Is a more expensive launch monitor more accurate?

We don't publish accuracy comparisons, because no manufacturer publishes comparable independent accuracy data and anyone ranking them is guessing or selling. What we can tell you is which units we install, how each behaves in a real room, and which ones fit the space you actually have.
